Amalia Urrego is from a small town in Antioquia called Sabaneta. Together with her husband and family, they are part of the Proyecto Renacer, or Project Rebirth, a program that raises families from poverty through work programs. She lives in La Sierra, a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Medellín.
On one side of La Sierra lies Medellin, on the other, the beautiful countryside of Antioquia. It is an area previously known for long periods of social conflict and violence. For years, access was almost impossible due to guerrilla activity and drug trafficking. But Amalia’s husband, Yesid, and his family, who had always worked coffee in the area, somehow managed to care for the area farms. They knew that these lands were rich in ideal soils and traditional coffee varieties and would someday flourish. And because access was so difficult, ironically, the violence actually helped preserve the farms.

In La Sierra most of the work is done manually. Amalia and Yesid are in charge of receiving, selecting, and washing the cherries from other families in the Renacer project. She keeps records of weight and quantities. She manages the fermentation and drying processes. She is also the accountant! Most importantly, Amalia is the constant and primary point of contact between the La Sierra coffee farmers and Proyecto Renacer.

Amalia is also a mother, she gets up every day at 5:30 am in to prepare her four children for school. She then does household chores like cleaning and cooking before she begins her workday. Amalia continually seeks out and receives training from experts to constantly improve the coffee processing and product quality.
But this exemplary woman also has her feet on the ground. Her primary goal is to have a life of simple dignity for her and her family. She wants to be a role model for her children. She does allow herself to dream though. Amalia continues her growth and learning. She wants to become an artist who magically transforms all the hard work in the fields and on the farms into a fine cup of coffee. She wants to become an exemplary barista, a barista who can take her customers from the Antioquia countryside through every detail of the journey from cherry to bean to that cup of coffee they’re enjoying.

Amalia’s love for what she does can be seen in gestures as simple as talking to her coffee bushes, asking them to produce well, to give them a good harvest. Proyecto Renacer takes care of their coffee as if it was their child. Perhaps this connection is what allows La Sierra coffees to excel in competition even when growing conditions were not the best.

Amalia and her husband Yesid are fully committed to the project. They see a brighter future for their children and for their community. Through their hard work, and the hard work and dedication of their compatriots, La Sierra is no longer known as a place of violence but as of one of the finest coffee producing regions in the world.
Please enjoy this coffee, a coffee that has passed through Amalia’s care and the care from everyone at Proyecto Renacer. Enjoy the love and quality and imagine Amalia’s gentle smile.

Treat yourself every day by sharing a cup with Amalia.
